Does Apple say it cannot verify the file is free of malware?

The current Mac PKG has no Developer ID Installer signature, and the bundled app uses a development ad-hoc signature. This warning can appear because production signing and Apple notarization are not complete. It is separate from screen recording permission, and downloading the DMG instead does not fix it.

This message is different from a malware detection alert, but it does not guarantee that the file is safe. Do not install it if you cannot trust its source.

Only if you trust the source and want to test the preview

1. Check the official download and checksum.

   Use the download from this site and compare its SHA-256 value. A matching checksum verifies that files match; it does not replace a malware scan.

2. After opening the PKG, check Privacy & Security.

   After the warning, go to the Security section in System Settings → Privacy & Security. Look for Open Anyway for the recently blocked ZeroShot file.

3. Decide whether to allow this specific file.

   Only if you decide to proceed, choose Open Anyway and review the next confirmation. Authenticate yourself if asked. Do not disable security protections for the operating system as a whole.

The production fix is to sign the app and installer with Developer ID certificates and replace the download with an Apple-notarized release. The current download has not completed that process.

Install on Mac

macOS 15 or later · Apple Silicon or Intel Mac

1. Quit any running copy of ZeroShot completely.

   Save your edits, then use ⌘ + Q or Quit in the app menu. Closing the window may leave the app running in the menu bar.

2. Choose an installation file.

   The PKG installer guides you through installation into /Applications/ZeroShot.app. For the DMG, open it and drag the app into Applications.

3. Check the permissions needed for capture.

   In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, allow the copy of ZeroShot you will actually run. Microphone access is needed only when that recording option is enabled.

4. Reopen the same app after changing permissions.

   Check whether an older development build has a different app name or path. If capture still fails despite permission appearing enabled, you may need to check the permission entry for the current app yourself.

Install on Windows

Windows 10/11 · x64 (64-bit) · v0.1.0-beta.1

1. Run the EXE installer.

   Install for the current user, then launch ZeroShot from the Start menu or desktop. This file is an unsigned development beta.

2. Or use the portable version.

   Extract the ZIP completely, then run ZeroShot.exe. Node.js and the OCR models are included; no separate installation is needed.

3. Try capture and editing with sample content.

   Choose region, window, or display capture. Recordings are saved as WebM files. System audio and microphone input are included only when you select them.

4. Use the tray menu to quit completely.

   Closing the window leaves ZeroShot in the system tray. Right-click its icon and choose Quit. The uninstaller does not delete your capture library.

Verify your download

Compare your file's SHA-256 hash with the value on the download page. A matching checksum does not replace operating-system code signing or a safety certification.

Where is capture data stored?

Originals, edits, and OCR text are stored locally. To share an edited result, use copy or export. Do not share the entire originals folder.
